Very Talented Sculptors
Here are a few artists that have caught my attention!
Sculpture
- Wim Delvoye
Self described architect, prankster, farmer, megalomaniac: Wim Delvoye is an extreme artist, that is not afraid of a little controversy. Delvoye has mastered all the skills of the traditional artisan - from weaving, tattooing, ceramics, stained glass and steel.
Cloaca, also known as the "poo-machine", is probably Wim Delvoye's most famous art installation. In 2000, he put together a complex machinery at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, Belgium, that mimics the action of the human digestive system and converts food in feces. Real food is dropped down a funnel into a meat grinder (simulating the teeth) twice a day. Then, viewers can follow the food as it makes its way through a series of glass containers containing human digestive juices and enzymes, which represent the various stages of digestion. At the end of the tract, the machine produces feces which are then vacuum-packed and sold in translucent boxes. It is told that the smell is so powerful that not many visitors can take it.

- Jean Tinguely
Jean Tinguely was a Swiss sculptor and experimental artist. He was best known for his machine-like "kinetic" scuptures that usually destroyed themselves when operated. His mechanical pieces were a commentary on our society's growing dependence on technology. All of his sculptures are made from found objects and old machines. Watching videos of his sculptures, my favorite aspects were the sounds his machines made. They look cool, sound cool, and explode even cooler.
Another of Tinguely's creations I am a huge fan of are his painting machines. In one day, Jean was able to create 40,000 paintings using just one of these creative creations.
Drawing
- Paul Cadden
Cadden's hyper-realistic drawings are so massive, in terms of size and detail, that he only produces around seven pieces per year. They usually take an average of between three and six weeks to complete. Normally sis works are created using only a pencil, though he also uses pastels, watercolours, acrylic, and chalk. I'll let his amazing work speak for itself!
Cadden's favorite inspirational mantra is the phrase "to intensify the normal". He says of his work, "Although the drawings and paintings I make are based upon photographs, videos stills etc, the idea is to go beyond the photograph." A sentiment I also share when it comes to my own art-making. His street scene drawings are my personal favorites.
